On Saturday, Santa Anita will host the 77th edition of the $150,000 Robert B. Lewis Stakes. The Grade 3 race will be run at a mile and a sixteenth and has drawn a field of six Triple Crown hopefuls.
Dortmund will put his undefeated streak on the line and has been installed as the morning line favorite at odds of 4-5 for trainer Bob Baffert. Purchased for $140,000 as a juvenile, the chestnut son of Big Brown is a perfect three for three. He earned the first graded stakes victory of his career with a hard-fought victory in the Los Alamitos Futurity (G1) and has been training steadily since then for his sophomore debut. Martin Garcia will be aboard from post position six.
Firing Line takes aim at rival Dortmund
Second choice at 7-5 on the morning line is Firing Line who will get a rematch with Dortmund after falling a head short in the Los Alamitos Futurity (G1). Trained by Simon Callaghan, the bay son of Line of David was purchased for $240,000 as a juvenile and broke his maiden over Del Mar’s synthetic main track in his second career start. He will get a jockey change to Gary Stevens and they are scheduled to break from post position five.
Rock Shandy out to prove Sham runner-up was not a fluke
Also in the field at morning line odds of 6-1 is Rock Shandy for trainer Peter Miller and Donegal Racing. A ridgling son of Lemon Drop Kid, the $290,000 yearling broke his maiden in his second start on the turf at Del Mar as a juvenile. After a third-place finish against stakes company on the grass, he switched to the main track and finished second at odds of 21-1 to Calculator in the Sham Stakes (G3). Victor Espinoza will be back aboard and they will break from post two.
