Bet on the Presque Isle Mile

The Presque Isle Mile takes place at Presque Isle Downs, situated south of Erie, Pennsylvania. The mile is run by thoroughbreds three years and older on the tapeta track, which is a synthetic surface made of a mix of rubber, sand and fiber, all coated with wax. This event was part of the launch of the new racetrack and casino in 2007 and typically takes place in early September on the Labor Day weekend. These stakes started with a purse of $175,000 and has increased along with the popularity of the Presque Isle Mile.

2016 Presque Isle Mile Contenders

With a field of 12 plus one from the also-eligible list, the 2016 Presque Isle Mile appears to be as deep as it is wide. Ghost Hunter is a lukewarm favorite at 9/2 and seeks his fifith consecutive victory for trainer Jamie Ness. The six year-old gelded son of Ghostzapper steps up sharply in class after defeating allowance foes August 28 at Presque Isle and has not faced stakes competition since a seventh-place finish in the Challenger Stakes in March at Tampa Downs.

Great Minds, listed as the 9/2 co-favorite, won the Grade 3 Texas Mile Stakes in May, but has lost his last two starts, finishing second and fifth respectively in a pair of stakes events for trainer Al Stall. In a wide open event bettors will have plenty of choices.

This race was one of the first to be run on Tapeta surface in the United States, giving researchers a chance to study the relationship between the synthetic substance and the physiology of thoroughbreds. The first running of the Presque Isle Mile resulted in Independent George winning and Bestowed running second. Both horses were known to train on tapeta practice facilities, establishing a winning tradition for horses accustomed to this synthetic surface. The prize money for this event has quickly risen over the years to a total guaranteed purse of $250,000, with $150,000 going to the winner.
